Cooper students gain real-world experience and career preparation

THE WOODLANDS, TX – This summer, 14 Cooper students participated in Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) internship programs. Students learned hands-on about fields ranging from local government to oil and gas to medicine, and worked to prepare for college and their careers beyond.

With so many potential career paths to consider, many Cooper students take time off from college to explore these options. “Even if a student decides that a profession is not for him or her, it makes sense to learn that lesson early,” said EfTA President Monica Bomkamp Enia.

One senior, Medhansh Bhagchandani, was an intern at the Woodlands Chamber of Commerce. “I participated in discussions and worked with my colleagues to learn new business and marketing skills and it was a really fun experience,” said Bhagchandani. In addition to the new experiences and insights gained, Bhagchandani also contributed to the planning of the Woodlands Area Business Summit, which will take place this November.

Another of Cooper’s seniors, Moisola Bassir, was an intern at Houston Methodist Hospital (The Woodlands), working specifically in the orthopedic service line. “I shadowed nurses and doctors and gained more insight into how a hospital works,” Bassir said.

Susannah Keizer chose the non-profit sector and did an internship at Interfaith in the development department of The Woodlands. “I learned how they receive funding and also attended planning meetings for both of their upcoming events,” Keizer said.

Opportunities like these give students real-world experiences that can impact both their college plans and their future. Cooper Head of College Counseling Laura Schroeder said: “The EfTA internship program offers students the opportunity to explore the work environment and a possible career. It’s an eye-opening experience for many students, and they often reflect on their work and personal growth in their college applications.”

In addition to EfTA-sponsored internships, many Cooper students have participated in external internships or accepted jobs this summer.
