When Christopher Nolan Approved Interstellar In 2014, it became one of his greatest and most impressive films of all time. His ability to intrigue and confuse the viewer’s mind became difficult to find. The psychological space drama adventure takes place in a future in which the earth will become uninhabitable. A NASA physicist (Michael Caine) develops a way to send people through a wormhole in search of a new planet to make their home. The team is led by a farmer and former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) who leaves his family behind for his expedition just so his children can grow up in a better world. Through his mission as a scientist on the one hand and his journey as a father on the other, Cooper’s character explores a wide range of experiences, which makes this film more sentimental and touching.
With an ensemble consisting of McConaughey, Caine, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, and Matt DamonAmong other things, this Nolan creation is a real treat for the senses. A film with deep scientific theories and intense human emotions in the game, Interstellar remains a unique science fiction story that takes you on a bizarrely beautiful adventure through time and space every time. So yes, it is difficult to repeat that experience and come up with equally breathtaking stories. But at the same time, it would be wrong to say that there haven’t been any other science fiction flicks with similar intentions and motivations.
When you watched Interstellar and loved it, then here are the top seven similar sci-fi adventure dramas that will twist your brain and take you on a journey far and beyond this humble planet. So buckle up and prepare for departure!
Created by Alfonso Cuaron, Heaviness is one of the most nerve-wracking films of the 2010s. It follows two astronauts, Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) on a routine mission when something goes wrong. Since they are stranded in the vastness of space, they have minimal hope of returning to Earth unless one of them sacrifices their life for the other to conserve resources.
Shrouded in grief in contrast to the need for emotional distance in the cold nothingness of space, a solo astronaut has to fight to stay alive. Visually brilliant and emotionally intense, Heaviness is one of Bullock’s most impressive performances and a film not to be missed if you love space dramas.
Another example of Ridley ScottFilmmaking brilliance, The Martian Stars Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain. Although both are also in Interstellar, this science fiction flick is very different. That said, it has stunning visuals and storytelling as well.
The Martian follows astronaut Mark Watney (Damon), all alone on Mars after being left behind by his crew after a mission. While struggling to survive on the Red Planet, Mark goes through a number of troubling experiences, some of which are fun and some less so. From trying to grow food to making contact with the earth, The Martian is essentially a very humane survival story mixed in with a lot of serious scientific concepts. There is action, humor and a lot of emotional moments that make up this one great film.
Director, co-writer and co-producer of James Gray, Ad Astra characteristics Brad Pitt in the role of an astronaut. The story follows Roy McBride (Pitt), who sets out to find his father H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), who is believed to be dead on a space station in Neptune orbit. Clifford was in search of intelligent life in space that would become a threat to life on earth and the entire solar system. Roy must contact him and save the world.
In addition to Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones, the film also starred Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland, among other things in outstanding roles. Though at its core Sci-Fi, with many similar elements from Interstellar, Ad Astra also explores an emotional father-son story and momentous existential questions that are sure to mess up your brain a little. Check out the stunning pictures and of course Brad Pitt.
Released in 2007, this film could be compared to Interstellar, at least in the conceptual theories that Interstellar also explored. Created by Alex Garland, from Ex machine and destruction Fame, sunshine follows a crew of international astronauts on a mission to revive the dying sun by throwing an atomic bomb into its core. But as with such plans, things quickly go awry.
The film has an ensemble cast including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Curtis cliff, Troy Garity, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Chipo Chung. Directed by Danny Boyle, sunshine is quite rich in sci-fi aspects, unique visual effects, and a very mature story. It’s not just about a man trying to save the world, it’s a team of people from all over the world doing what they have to do. It’s pretty straightforward and promises a good watch.
moon is a film that transcends labels. Yes, it’s a space drama. But there are also elements of horror and psychological thrillers that make this 2009 film a cult classic. Most importantly, the narrative of this science fiction flick is quite unusual. The story follows five or six characters, but focuses on two – Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), an astronaut, and his robot companion GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Bell is an energy worker on Earth in the near future, where a large energy company is extracting clean electricity from the moon. During one of his routine trips with his moon rover, Bell had an almost fatal accident. And when he recovers, things around him are no longer the same.
More details of the plot would give away the thrill of the film, so we won’t get into that. All we can say is that this story was the British filmmaker’s directorial debut Duncan Jones, which is also known for other popular and fascinating titles like Source code (2011), Warcraft (2016) and most recently Mute (2018). This is definitely a must see if you loved it Interstellar.
When you loved Interstellar and you’re a fan of ’70s science fiction films, then oblivion should be next on your list. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is based on the unpublished graphic novel by the director of the same name and the stars Tom Cruise in a leading role, along with Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, among other. The story takes place in the year 2077, when the earth was destroyed by extraterrestrial beings called Scavengers, forcing humanity to relocate on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.
Jack Harper (Cruise) is a technician sent back to Earth to fix the drones used to fight the remaining looters. Harper encounters a spaceship crash and rescues a survivor, but is captured by the Scavengers where he must fight for survival against a newly emerged alien threat. Even if it might not sound like it Interstellar, oblivion is also a vision of the future of the earth and humanity in distant outer space, where they must be saved. And that makes this movie one of our top recommendations for Interstellar Fans.
The fact that Beginning is another notable work by Christopher Nolan, good reason to put this sci-fi film on this list. If you want more reasons, Beginning has a star-studded cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine, to name a few.
The story takes place in a fictional world and follows Dominick “Dom” Cobb (DiCaprio), a professional thief who steals information from people by infiltrating their subconscious. One of his targets, a Japanese businessman, offers Cobb a chance to erase his criminal past in exchange for “incepting” someone else’s idea into another person’s mind. This, of course, has many worrying consequences. It’s extremely cerebral, with stunning cinematography, innovative action, and intriguing graphics – everything you can expect from a great sci-fi movie!
