New WhatsApp Android update turns the app into Snapchat

WhatsApp is now testing a new feature to view photos and videos once on Android, with iOS users likely to access it at a later date.

Whatsapp Introduces a new one-time display of photos and videos feature for certain Android app beta testers. The new addition to WhatsApp’s expiring media tools comes after WhatsApp’s chaotic policy changes earlier this year. While WhatsApp claims it hasn’t lost a large number of users to its changes, the company has spent several months ignoring statements about how the policy changes would affect users.

Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company, previously experimented with making its messaging platforms impermanent when WhatsApp introduced “disappearing messages” last year. Unlike the one-time view, however, disappearing messages are deleted from chat rooms after seven days. Later disappearing messages were added to Messenger and Instagram.

According to WABetaInfoTo use the one-time viewing feature, users simply select the timer button to the right of the text box in which to place an image. When selected, users will receive a text icon indicating that the view has been activated once, and a message with the one-time viewing icon will appear in the text chat. After the recipient has closed the picture or video, the message is replaced by a “Expired“Notification. View once does not mean that recipients cannot take a screenshot of the sent media. Likewise, users who have been blocked by the sender can still interact with media that are set for one-time viewing if they share common chat rooms with the sender.” .

Currently, View Once is only compatible with WhatsApp beta accounts on devices running version 2.21.14.3 of the Android app. While anyone who wants to test beta features can sign up through the Google Play Store, the WhatsApp beta testing program is currently closed. For now, users who want to get their hands on the View Once functionality will have to wait until it is fully implemented with a future update. Although the feature is only available on Android, iOS users will be able to use the view to send photos and videos with a future update.

While the feature shares similarities with tools on Snapchat, it lacks the customizability that makes Snapchat as popular as it is today. WhatsApp’s beta allows users to view media sent only once instead of setting custom parameters like deleting media after 24 hours or storing media in a chat room after posting. Snapchat also allows users to set entire chats to be automatically deleted after 24 hours. Not to mention, Snapchat users can also go into the setting for a story and see which users viewed and even took screenshots. However, ephemeral content is the bread and butter of Snapchat while WhatsApp and Facebook are still catching up.
