The Gay Officers Action League opposes NYC Pride organizers’ decision to ban NYPD officials from attending this weekend’s Pride parade, telling Fox News that the move sends the wrong message regarding inclusion .
NYPD detective and Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) president Brian Downey stepped onto America’s Newsroom on Friday to respond to the “shameful” decision he believed to be against the visibility of the LGBTQ community fights.
NYC PRIDE BAN POLICE FROM EVENTS UNTIL 2025, LGBT OFFICERS SLAMEN THE MOVE
“We’re talking about a choice that creates unnecessary divisions in the community,” Downey said, pointing out that the choice goes against the spirit of “inclusion.”
âIt causes a lot of pain for our members, who every day get into a system that historically was not for them, and they wear uniforms or sit at a desk and work in an environment where they somehow force the system to deal with them . You know, they choose to go ahead and do it in these systems, in these spaces, and attract that identity and make it known. “
The organizers of the annual event said the ban will last until 2025 because they want “safer spaces” for LGBTQ people and people of color who feel threatened by the police.
“The sense of security law enforcement agencies are designed to provide can instead be threatening and sometimes dangerous for those in our community who are most likely to be attacked with excessive violence and / or for no reason,” NYC Pride said in a statement.
Downey argues that members of his organization are campaigning for “real change” in law enforcement, working in police academy classrooms, training rooms and with police commissioners to make the criminal justice system more advanced.
“[We] really do everything possible to acknowledge the pain and hurt many people in our community and colored communities have experienced from law enforcement, “Downey told Bill Hemmer.
“I’ve dedicated a large part of my life to this work since I was a gay man … our organization has been around for almost 40 years and we do this work.”

GOAL, a fraternal organization, was founded in 1982 and about 200 of its members and their families attend the march each year, NYC Pride spokesman Dan Dimant told Fox News.
The Pride festival will be mostly online because of the pandemic but will have some personal components.
